MARIE CLAIRE MESSOUMA MANLANBIEN
RESEARCH RESIDENCY

ANTANANARIVO
October 10 - 7 November, 2023

Marie-Claire Messouma Manlanbien, who has her origins in France, Guadeloupe and Côte d'Ivoire, is undertaking a research residency that coincides with the exhibition Bientôt je vous tisse tous, a tribute to Razakaratrimo Zoarinivo, known as Madame Zo, at Fondation H’s space.

Marie-Claire Messouma Manlanbien (France, Guadeloupe, Côte d’Ivoire) was born in 1990 in Paris, where she lives and works. She graduated in 2016 from the École nationale supérieure d'art in Paris-Cergy. She works across a variety of mediums including textiles, drawing, sculpture, photography, video-performance, engraving, painting and installation. She creates ephemeral, poetic narratives which are in perpetual renewal, resulting in pieces which both ‘witness’ and ‘trace’ past histories or events. She is interested in the complex relationships between everyday life, universal popular culture, and specific traditional practices. She creates encounters between industrial materials such as aluminum, copper and brass and natural materials such as raffia fiber, rope, wood and shells... With each installation she creates and sets up, the artist creates poetic stories and narratives shaped by a myriad of cultural influences and manifesting a “plural identity.”

During her research residency at Fondation H in October-November 2023, she will observe the body of work of artist Razakaratrimo Zoarinivo, with a particular focus on local natural and medicinal fibers. The second part of her residency will take place in March-April 2024.
