Located in the Ambatomena quarter, literally “the place of red stones” in malagasy, in the heart of downtown Antananarivo, Fondation H’s building was constructed between 1912 and 1924 to house the Central Offices of Posts and Telegraphs, under the French colonial administration.
Typical of the architecture of that period in traditional brick and tiles of Madagascar, the building has been completely restored (2021-2023), under the aegis of the Malagasy agency Architecture Otmar Dodel and in close collaboration with local tradesmen, someof whom have rediscovered and rehabilitated old techniques for this renovation, including carpentry, woodworking, parquetry and tile-making for the roof. A large extension of 220 m² at ground level and 8 m under ceiling was also added to the rear of the building.
Fondation H is committed to a long-term approach to its environmental impact. The entire building and its Café are powered exclusively by a solar panel array installed on the roof. The building's natural air circulation was designed at the time of construction(2021-2023), in order to successfully do without air conditioning. The vast garden, entirely conceived and planted by Fondation H, features only plants and flowers endemic to Madagascar. The food and beverages served at the Café are all based on fresh, local and seasonal produce.
Inside the vast building, 1500 m² can be allocated to artist projects and exhibitions. Entirely renovated and adapted toits new function as an art center, the historic building's rooms have been complemented by a large space with 8 m ceilings, enabling monumental and very free hangings.
A café, set up on the first floor and in the central courtyard of Fondation H, offers a daily renewed selection of fresh, local and seasonal dishes. A menu of classic Malagasy dishes revisited by Chef Nasaina complements the daily specials and drinks.
The restaurant is open at the same hours asFondation H.
For reservations, please contact the Café on +261 38 49 753 11.
The library of Fondation H, entirely free of charge and accessible to all, is the country's first library dedicated to art and culture. It offers a wide selection of books that can be consulted on site, a free Wi-Fi connection, and computers available to the public.
Numerous events are organized throughout the year: book presentations, workshops and discussions on the topic of writing or publishing, meetings with authors, and so on.
The library is open to the public for free, without reservation, from Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 12pm and 2pm to 4:45pm.
On the ground floor of Fondation H, astudio is available to local and international artists. Artists in residency, scheduled throughout the year, are invited by Fondation H to explore specific themes and/or develop their artistic projects with the help of research and production grants.
Artist residences are currently by Fondation H invitation only.
On the second floor of Fondation H, a space is dedicated to the Hay program (creative workshops for young people aged6 to 14), which takes place every working day throughout the year, and to the more occasional public mediation programs with no age limit.
Fondation H offers guided visits for groups on request. The visit format is then adapted to suit the public and the time they have at their disposal. To benefit from such a free visit, a reservation must be made two weeks in advance via email; for Antananarivo(contact@fondation-h.com) and for Paris (paris@fondation-h.com).
Apart from these organized group visits, each visitor is welcomed within the exhibition spaces by the cultural mediation team, and can be accompanied, if they wish, on their tour of the exhibitions.
