PARIS
MAY 19 - JUNE 5, 2021
Maya-Inès Touam was at Fondation H – Paris from March 1 to May 18, 2021, as part of a creative workshop and research space for a series of works to be developed in situ. From May 19 to June 5, 2021, the artist presents the exhibition Fil d’Exil, the outcome of her creation residency. Curator Fannie Escoulen penned a companion text for the exhibition.
Maya-Inès Touam's visual research for this project focuses on how links are established around objects, fabrics and headdresses as redefined by African diasporas(mainly from North and West Africa) living in France. Her reflection starts with textiles imported and brought back from these regions, everyday utensils, ethnic markers, inherent to our stories, and part of the French collective memory. These objects pass down messages and cultural heritage, and enlighten us about entangled identities.
